California, The Golden State

Tracy is a railroad town; brakemen eat surly meals in diners by the tracks.  Trains howl away across the valley. The sun goes down long and red. All the magic names of the valley unrolled - Manteca, Madera, all the rest. Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgundy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries. I stuck my head out the window and took deep breath of the fragrant air.It was the most beautiful of all moments.

Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Chapter 12, New York 1957

Often, when following the trail which meanders over the hills, I pull myself up in an effort to encompass the glory and the grandeur which envelops the whole horizon. Often, when the clouds pile up in the north and the sea is churned with white caps, I say to myself: This is the California that men dreamed of years ago, this is the Pacific that Balboa looked out on from the Peak of Darien, this the face of earth as the Creator intended it to look".

Henry Miller, Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch. New York 1957, p. 6

American Graffiti” is not only a great movie but a brilliant work of historical fiction; no sociological treatise could duplicate the movie’s success in remembering exactly how it was to be alive at that cultural instant.

Cashmere hills filled with evergreens
Flowin' from the clouds down to meet the sea
With the granite cliff as a referee
Crimson sunsets and golden dawns
Mother deer with their newborn fawns
Under Big Sur skies and that's where I belong.

Big Sur I've got plans for you
Me and mine are going to
Add ourselves to your lengthy list of lovers
And live in canyons covered with a springtime green
While birds and flowers to be heard and seen
And on my old guitar I'll make up songs to sing.
Sparklin' springs from the mountainside
Join the Big Sur river rushing to the tide
Where my kids can search for sea shells at low tide
Big Sur my astrology it says that I am meant to be
Where the rugged mountain meets the water

And so while stars shine brightly and up above
Fog rolls in through a redwood grove
And to my dying fire I think I'll add a log.

From time to time I must go away

The thoughts of Big Sur won’t let me stay

Away from Big Sur

On my way to sunny California
On my way to spend another sunny day

Water, water get yourself in the cool, clear, water
The sun shines brightly down on Penny's place
The sun shines brightly down on the bay

The air's so clean it'll just take your mind away
Take your mind away, take your mind away

Have you ever been south of Monterey?
Barrancas carve the coast line and the chaparral flows to the sea
'Neath waves of golden sunshine
And have you ever been north of Morrow bay

The south coast plows the sea
And the people there are of the breed
They don't need electricity

Water, water, cool cascades of clear, clear water
The sun dance final scene sets the hills ablaze
Horizon edges quick up the mountain's way

Have you ever been down Salinas way?
Where Steinbeck found the valley
And he wrote about it the way it was in his travelin's with Charley

And have you ever walked down through the sycamores
Where the farmhouse used to be
There the monarch's autumn journey ends on a windswept Cyprus tree

Water, get water, get yourself in that, get yourself in that
Get yourself in that cool, clear, water
The sun shines brightly down on Penny's place

Get yourself in that water
The air's so clean that it just takes your mind away
Take your mind away, take your mind away

Have you ever been to a festival, the Big Sur congregation?
Where Country Joe will do his show and he'd sing about liberty
And the people there in the open air, one big family
Yeah, the people there love to sing and share their new found liberty

Baja is the earth’s second-longest peninsula – over 1200km of the mystical, ethereal, majestic and untamed. Those lucky enough to make the full Tijuana to Los Cabos trip will find that the Carretera Transpeninsular (Hwy 1) offers stunning vistas at every turn. The middle of nowhere is more beautiful than you ever imagined, and people are friendly, relaxed and helpful – even in the border towns. Side roads pass through tiny villages and wind drunkenly along the sides of mountains. Condors carve circles into an unblemished blue sky. Some people simply sip drinks and watch the sun disappear into the Pacific. Some choose to feel the rush of adrenalin as they surf that perfect wave. Others walk through sherbet-colored canyons or stare up at the night’s canopy of scattered-diamond stars. Whichever way you choose to take it, you’ll discover some of Baja’s many joys.
